Customized Education Plan

Students may earn secondary credit courses in three different ways as follows:

  • In-class study is the most common and affordable way to earn credit courses.
  • Private one-on-one instruction: This is suitable for students with special needs or who need a credit course faster than our normal schedule. In this scenario, there will be no fixed schedule. The student sees his or her teacher on a one-on-one basis. The length of the course is controlled by the student. However, the 110 hours of instruction required and set by the Ministry of Education will be followed.
  • Online Study (virtual school): Some students may be unable to attend school due to illness, work, other commitments or because they live too far from Markham Secondary School. Consequently, secondary schools offer online courses, also known as e-learning or virtual school, through various online courses. Internet-based courses allow students to complete accredited academy credits from the comfort of their homes. Online or e-learning courses are subject to supervised exams. Students who live in the GTA area (The Greater Toronto Area) are expected to attend Markham Secondary School for their major exams. Otherwise, they must arrange for a proctor, approved by Markham Secondary School, at their own expense.
  • Blended Courses are designed for local students living in GTA (Greater Toronto Area) including; city of Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, Etobicoke, Vaughan, Woodbridge, Maple, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket, Markham, Scarborough, Thornhill, North York, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax.  In a blended course, students and teachers meet at least once a week in a private or semi-private session. In these meetings, students ask questions and discuss any course issues. The teacher can evaluate or test the student during these sessions and give direct feedback. For better results, we encourage all students living in the above cities to choose the blended format.
